Management of reservoirs and local dams is critical to successful farming, mining and waste-water treatment operations in southern Africa. With prolonged droughts and a rise in the average temperatures, water management is a high priority consideration.
South Africa is classified as a water-scarce country and depends on agriculture for food production. The irrigation sector is the largest consumer of water in the country, accounting for about 62% of water utilisation, but also losing 30–40%.
Given the threat of drought and climate change, efficient irrigation systems have become a necessity, especially in the farming sector where most losses occur.
South Africa receives about half of the average global annual rainfall and is the 30th driest country in the world in terms of available water per capita (Schreiner et al., 2010). Over 60% of the country receives less than 500 mm of rainfall per annum, which is theoretically the minimum required for successful dryland cropping, while 21% receives less than 200 mm (De Villiers et al., 2004). Although about 70% of crop production in the country is rain-fed, only 35% of the country receives enough rainfall for successful rain-fed (dryland) crop production (CSIR, 2010).
